MARTIAL ARTS
The Asian Martial Arts have been a long
standing passion of mine. The combination
of action and introspection, the allure of
disciplined living, and the sheer beauty of
human potential make the study of these
arts a continuing fascination.

In addition to my more formally academic
work on cultural aspects of the Japanese
martial tradition (a list of articles and books
can be found on the bio page), I have also
trained in various martial arts.

Some of my fiction is designed to show a
broad audience of readers selected
elements of what make the martial arts
special.

And I also have tried to create martial-arts
themed fiction that bucks the trend in
popular fiction and is grounded in reality
(or my version of it).

Perhaps one of the nicest things about my
study of the martial arts is to have had the
opportunity to share my enthusiasm with
my son Owen, a fine kenshi in his own right
(he does men-uchi on me like someone
driving a nail).
