In this course, students will analyze leadership and the culture of organizations.
Experts attribute the success or failure of enterprises to their "organizational culture."
What is culture? What are the distinctive methods that leaders and consultants borrow from cultural anthropology to deepen their understanding of their organizations? How does analysis of an organization's culture help its leaders achieve their mission?
The seminar will focus on the interplay of leadership, culture, and organizational effectiveness. How do leaders create, embed, and change the values of the organizations they lead?
Participants will begin to learn the skills of ethnography, culminating in a mini-ethnographic study of an organization and a report of their findings.

The seminar will focus on the interplay of leadership, culture, and organizational effectiveness. How do leaders create, embed, and change the values of the organizations they lead?
What makes a leader? Is leadership an acquired skill or innate personal quality? Are their different styles of leadership that are more effective than others in particular cultural settings?

This is a lot to cover in one course. We'll be running on two slowly converging tracks:
- a discussion of leadership - its characteristics and
source
- social organization and culture - how human society is
structured and functions and how unique socio-cultural characteristics shape the nature of leadership
In the course, we'll be reading some foundational articles on social organization and function to orient students to the anthropological perspective.
We'll be reading a Puilitzer Prize-winnning novel that is about many things, including the actions of different leaders and the leadership styles they employ.
Finally, students will begin to learn the skills of ethnography, culminating in a mini-ethnographic study of an organization and a report of their findings.
